Camp – 2024 Wainui

Kia Ora!
How are you?

On the 13th of March, the year 7/8’s went to Wainui Camp to learn valuable life lessons and skills about the wilderness. It was quite fun, interesting, and difficult at some times. Here is what I personally thought of camp

Some good things are that there were actually fun activities! One was a “zipline” but it was really a high flying-fox. I also liked paddling or kayaking. I think it was very entertaining and fun for a new experience. It was very tiring though.

A challenge for me was handling homesickness. I personally don’t get homesick but the one time that I do, gets super overwhelming for me. Another thing was trying to stay calm while others were trying to prank and scare others. Someone scared me and I screamed like a little girl. It was super funny but scary. I thought we were going into a lockdown.

What I would do differently or change about camp would be to add a little bit more water activities that are close to us. I really enjoyed the raft building, which is what inspired me to say this.

Here is a photo of us 1 stop before arriving to take a lunch break.

All About Me 2024

Kia Ora! I am Koby, and welcome to 2024!

I have been learning a few things outside of school, like italian, and zulu. I also have a sister named Tia and have been trying my best to spend as much time with her and my family as I can. I also like going outside of christchurch to go to the beaches and going in the water. I don’t know why but I find swimming in the water calming.

Today, I finished a poster on Canva using their new tool, Magic Studio, which is also AI to help me generate a poster about me. Here it is.

Do you have anything in common?

Mountains From The BIble

Kia Ora! How are you?

Today, room 10 started a new project with Miss Holland. It is where we learn about mountains from the bible. We had to choose 5 mountains, but I went in a group of 3, so it made it much easier. I partnered with Summer, and Imogen. We made quite a few slides, so here it is. Feel free to leave your reviews or comments in the comment sections.

What is your favorite mountain from the bible?

Ash Wednesday and Lent

Kia Ora!
How are you?

On the 14th of february, Ash Wednesday came about. On that day, it was also valentines day! What a rare occurrence. The whole school hurried and scattered to the church and took their seats to listen to Father Benjamin. He helps us believe in god and to love each other, just like the bible says.

Ash wednesday is the start of the time that jesus spent in the desert, before tragicly dying on easter. But not all hope was lost… I will explain the rest on easter.

I did my research and found a video about ash wednesday. This video is not made by me, so credits to Spirit Juice Kids. Here is the video.

Do you celebrate ash wednesday?

Life Education (Harold)

Kia Ora! How are you?

On the 7th of February, Jo and Helly came from Life Education to come and teach the school. There are different things they teach for each year, so for year 7, it was leadership.

They taught us what the difference is between a bossy boss and a good leader. A good leader coaches for improvement, gives credit, and participates, while the bossy boss takes credit, doesn’t participate, and hogs respect. This information is essential to know whether you are being a good leader, or a bossy boss.

We all have parts of us that are in the bossy boss category, but we all have parts that are in the good leader category. I personally think I am a good leader because I do my best to give credit, encourage and include, and share.

Helly later taught us about the brain. It is a very essential part of our bodies and there are many parts to it, like the brain stem, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex.

My experience with Jo and Helly was really good, apart from the behavior from us students, Jo and Helly did their best to teach us.

Top Team

Kia Ora!
How are you?

On the 2nd of December, some people who worked for Top Team came and arrived at NBC. Top Team is an organisation which will assist people in exercise for a few days.

There were various activities we had to complete in groups of 5-10, like water pipe, egg & spoon, conveyor belt, etc.

Water pipe was the one I found most challenging. It is one big tube with a golf ball inside. There are multiple holes scattered around it, which will leak water if not covered. You block the holes, and pour water in the tube, while trying to get the golf ball to come out via the opening at the top.

Another challenging task was the Conveyor Belt. It is where around 3 or more people go under this conveyor belt which has had all of the special wiring, and fancy things removed, and start walking to a cone and back. It is difficult because the group may shift forwards and leave tons of room at the back, causing the person in front to be squished.

This can cause some arguments or even make people happy, but whatever happens, we should all know that it was an experience that we at least attempted.

I found that working together was surprisingly hard with year 0-2’s. They are new to school, so it is understandable, but still quite challenging

SLJ Summer Styles

Kia Ora! How are you?

Today, we went onto the Summer Learning Journey blog to do another kick-start! This one was called “Summer Styles.” It is where you have to either make your own mosaic-like design on paper, or Google Draw, or you could use a template. I used a template and colored it in, which took quite a long time. I used gradient colors to make it look a little bit more realistic. Here it is!

What is your favorite type of art?

How are you?

Today, room 1 went onto the Summer Learning Journey blog and saw another task. It was to make music on Groove Pizza and to make an album cover. I took a bit of time to make the song and I am literally rushing to finish this, but I finished it just in time. I titled my song “Detective Drums.” and downloaded the song. Here is the album cover with the song.

First-Aid Adventure

Greetings!
How are you?

A few days ago, Sophie from Hato Hone St John’s came to New Brighton Catholic School to teach us about first aid. I go to St John’s, so I knew about some of this stuff already, but it was still very amusing. I have made a slide titled “My First-Aid Adventure” to present what I learned. Hato Hone St John’s give awards to kids if they are in a situation where they volunteer to do first-aid to someone in danger. Without further ado, here is the presentation!

Have you ever had to use first aid skills?

SLJ Superhero Post

Sawubona!

How are you?

Just a few moments ago, I registered for the Summer Learning Journey. My teacher then told us to do one of the Kick Start tasks. The one we chose was a one where you had to design a superhero. I used Craiyon to make an AI generated image. I don’t know why but I chose one that looks like baby shark. Here is the back story. In the deep, dark, areas of the ocean, a shark was born. He looked yellow, and got mocked a lot for his color and looks. One day, he decided to go up from the water, and then, BOOM!

He turned into a living 3 year old! He explored around, but started to struggle at an attempt to breathe. He is the only shark that is alive today that can tell the tale of the upper ground. Everyone else tried, but then fell straight to the ground and was never seen again. Did this mean that the yellow shark had powers?

If you were a shark, what would you do?

How would you survive if you lived under water?
